Abstract
Social media has become an integral part of young people’s lives today, offering various benefits such as enhancing social skills, strengthening relationships and providing relaxation and entertainment. However, its excessive and unchecked use can significantly impact the mental health and well-being of adolescents. It is crucial for students, parents, and educators to fully understand the implications of social media use, particularly the associated risks to mental health. This study aims to assess the extent of social media usage among students, identify psychological and mental health issues linked to its use, and propose strategies to mitigate the negative effects of overuse. Secondary data on social media use among urban youth was gathered, while primary data was collected through an online survey targeting students. The findings underscore the need to acknowledge and address the relationship between social media use and mental well-being. It is essential not only to identify effective solutions to
combat excessive social media use but also to implement these solutions promptly to protect young people’s mental health.
